The Chairman of the Mike Adenuga Group, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jnr. has presented a cheque of one hundred and fifty million naira to the University of Nigeria Nsukka for the infrastructural development of the Institution. At a special ceremony held in Nsukka on Tuesday, Dr. Adenuga said the donation was a gesture of goodwill to “this great citadel of learning that has produced leaders in the public and private sectors, chief executives and managers of multinational corporations, successful entrepreneurs and worthy ambassadors of this great country and beyond.”
Dr. Adenuga said that the MA Group made the donation in order to boost the capacity of the university to develop graduates that can compete favourably with their peers anywhere in the world, thereby securing the competitiveness, growth and prosperity of the nation.
“As an indigenous group of companies with global footprints, we believe that institutions of higher learning should be strengthened with adequate funding by both the government and the private sector to improve academic standard, research and development in line with international best practice”, he said.
Bar. Felix Akintola who led the delegation that presented the cheque to the university authorities, informed the Vice Chancellor about the completion of Globacom’s model outlet, the Gloworld, the Conoil Mega Petrol Station and the ETB branch in the university community for prompt telecommunication, banking and transportation solutions, ease of transactions and improved quality of life.
He stressed the importance of the Institution and the university community to the operations of the Mike Adenuga Group comprising Globacom Limited, Conoil Producing, Conoil Plc and other companies in real estate, banking, and commended the university authorities for the laudable programmes they initiated in the Institution for sustainable development and academic excellence.
In his response, the elated Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bartho .N. Okolo who raised the cheque sky high with his two hands, said the entire university community “is excited and grateful to Globacom for this incredible gift.”
The Vice Chancellor said “this is the role we expect multinationals like Globacom to play in the development of the Nigerian academic system. It is unfortunate that today, our tertiary institutions have fallen from grace to grass. However, with this kind of gesture from Globacom, our youths can compete again.”
He urged other multinationals to emulate what Globacom has done, stating that “like it obtains elsewhere in the world, it is the private sector that will develop our academic institutions and not government”.
In his remarks, the former Dean of Student Affairs and a member of the Governing Council Prof. Malachy Okweze who gave the vote of thanks, congratulated Globacom for the donation and its wide reach. He said when many people in the South East are travelling, they “dare not forget their Glo lines because there are several remote places you get to where it is only Glo that can save you”.
The presentation was witnessed by various dignitaries in the institution including the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, the Registrar, the Dean of Student Affairs, the Student Union President and other student leaders.
