Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital was on Friday thrown into confusion when five students of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Osiele, were reported to have been crushed to death by a tipper.
The incident, which occurred at about 4:00 pm, started when a truck loaded with granite, rammed into a taxi conveying the students and killed all of them on board on the spot. This led to pandemonium as the students of the institution went on rampage to protest the death of their colleagues. They trooped out to the streets, setting ablaze at least four trucks.
They barricaded the Abeokuta-Odeda-Ibadan road which is opposite their campus with bonfire, making travelers plying the road to be trapped in the traffic and making it difficult for commuters to proceed to their respective destinations for more than one hour.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident, saying some miscreants hijacked the students' protest, he also countered that only two students were confirmed dead. According to him, "Most of the students retreated when the management tried to address them, but some hoodlums who hijacked the protest continued, threatening to burn all the tippers at Asero motor park."
