Decomposing body discovered in a refuse dump by Enugu residents

Residents of Awkunanaw Street in the Enugu metropolis have appealed to the state government to evacuate the refuse dump in the area to prevent an outbreak of cholera.
The appeal followed the discovery of a decomposing body in the dump which was concealed in a bag.
Some of the residents said the body was discovered by workers of the state’s waste management agency since Tuesday. They, however, said that rather than remove it, the workers took to their heels.
They said that it was some policemen who removed the body on September 29 when the whole area became choked with an offensive odour.

One resident said that he “believed the body was dumped on Monday night because when ESWAMA came to clear the refuse, they saw the body and refused to evacuate the waste”. “Apparently they reported to the police as you can see that they have come to remove the body,” he said.
The residents could not easily ascertain the sex of the deceased but that some of its features indicated it was female. The body was removed for burial after a mild drama between the police and the driver of the ambulance used for the evacuation. The driver on seeing the state of the corpse refused to carry it but his attempt to escape was resisted by the police who forced him to carry the corpse.
